A quick look around, and I saw that only one Thesal remained standing. And not for long. The elf nearest to the creature pulled her foot back and kicked it squarely in the knee. An audible crack echoed throughout the clearing, but I wasn’t done yet.

I brought my sword around again. This time, I slashed horizontally, severing the beastman's hands. Before he could react, I rammed my sword straight up his gut. I yanked the hilt up to catch at his heart. The tip of my weapon sliced all the way into the monster's torso. His hot blood splashed my arms as I kicked him off the end of my sword.

I spun toward the prisoners and opened my mouth to say something about freeing the elves, but Ophelia stopped me short. She forced us both to hold still for a moment. As she did that, a handful of the elf women broke open their cages by kicking apart the bars on two sides, then pulling the roof down.

As the freed prisoners scattered to the woods, an elven woman raced over to Alexei and grabbed his keys, then started freeing her fellows. Meanwhile, I saw that the other prisoners had finished off the last three Thesal warriors. One had an arm torn off. Another lay on his side, gasping for breath around the shaft of an arrow protruding from his throat.

And the third ... well, let's just say it was a messy business, even for a Thesal. The prisoner who'd done the deed looked up at me and nodded.

All right, Ophelia breathed from inside my head, it looks like the Thesals will be no problem. We've got bigger fish to fry.

With that, she raised our sword up and swung to our right. It connected with something that snapped in half, followed by a high-pitched squeal of pain and rage. The next instant, a huge, insectile monster fell backward off of the cage.

Oh, Dio! Ophelia whispered. They were mating with the prisoners!

That thought brought the gorge rising in my throat.

Ophelia, though, wasn't done yet. She turned the blade towards our left, driving us up and over the cage in a single, sweeping arc. Our sword ripped up into a Thesal that had its clawed hands full of elven rump. Its screech ended with a choked-off gurgle as we sliced up into the roof of its mouth.

With our weapon still embedded, Ophelia kicked the beastman in the chest. It collapsed backward onto the cage. We twisted to pull the blade free.

I took half a moment to make sure that no one in the cage needed to be rescued. Instead, I watched the elven women tear into the surviving Thesallan with bare hands and teeth.

That was pretty nasty.

You weren’t kidding! Ophelia replied, directing me to jump down to the level of the tree line. You just killed three of the Duke's soldiers like you were swatting flies.

The remaining four Thesal closed in on me from around the cage. I ducked below the outstretched arms of one warrior, and brought the pommel of my sword around to connect with its skull.
